1. Are the results of liposuction permanent?
Liposuction removes fat cells. The cells that are removed are gone for good; however, if one gains weight the remaining cells can hypertrophy (get bigger) and can give the appearance of weight gain in the area of liposuction.
2. How much does liposuction surgery cost?
There are three charges for all surgeries: OR fees, anesthesia fee and surgeon s fee. Our office charges approximately $2000/ per area for the surgeon s fee. However, every plastic surgeon has their own individualized charges.
3. Will liposuction tighten up loose skin?
It will not tighten up loose skin, per se. Areas of loose skin such as the arms or tummy usually benefit from removing the loose skin usually in conjunction with liposuction (brachioplasty or abdominoplasty).
4. Can the fat come back?
The actual fat removed cannot come back, however, the fat cells that remain (there will always be some even if microscopic) can hypertrophy (grow bigger) if you gain weight.
5. Is it true that other areas get fat after liposuction?
If you gain weight, the remaining fat cells will hypertrophy and new fat cells can be deposited. Other areas will only get fat if you do not watch your diet and exercise to keep your weight under control.
6. Is liposuction surgery painful?
It shouldn t be. The tumescent fluid used during the operation has numbing medicine in it, so immediately after surgery you will be numb. You will feel bruised and have some discomfort for about a week postoperatively, but oral medication should help control the pain.
7. When can exercising be resumed?
You will have to wear a compression garment for 4-6 weeks after liposuction. I do not let my patients resume their normal workout regimen until 4 weeks postoperatively. Walking immediately is a good idea to prevent blood clots and should be done daily.
