1. What are the risks associated with liposuction surgery?
Just like with any surgery, there are risks associated with liposuction. However, risks are very rare because this surgery is performed at the skin level only. Infection is probably the most common risk and it is potentially dangerous. Side effects are lumpiness in the suction areas, scars that are too visible, asymmetry (differences) on the surgical areas and loose skin if too much fat is removed.
2. What technique will the surgeon use to perform the liposuction?
During my professional career I have been able to use traditional liposuction, ultrasound assisted liposuction, pulse assisted liposuction (PAL) and now Smartlipo MPX. (the newest device from Cynosure). It is my professional opinion that with this new technology I am able to deliver better results to my patients; I am not only removing unwanted fat deposits but I am sculpting my patients bodies.
Smarlipo MPX delivers twice as much energy as compared with the older Smartlipo machines, and also has some new accessories that make this device safer to use. At Renue Aesthetic Surgery we have the first Smartlipo MPX machine to the Kansas City area.
When you put the best device in the market in the hands of a good, experienced, liposculpturing plastic surgeon, you get the best possible results.

It will depend on the extent of the surgery. Smaller-volume Smartlipo MPX liposuction will be performed in our office under local anesthesia, which numbs only the targeted areas; (sculpturing of the abdomen, arms, neck and chin areas, legs), because we are able to eliminate the cost of the outpatient surgical center and the anesthesiologist the patient gets the best liposuction technique at a much better cost, however this limits the amount of liposuction we can do in one sitting. The usual cost is approximately $. 2500 to 3000 per area. Currently I perform larger volume liposuction (traditional) rarely. When indicated this will be performed in an outpatient surgery center, or in a hospital under general anesthesia and the cost also will depend on the extent of the procedure, aprox. $. 5,000 to 8,000.
4. Can exercise get rid of specific areas of fat without liposuction?
Potentially yes, however there are some areas which are almost impossible to get rid off. For these patients the best option is liposculturing with Smartlipo MPX.
5. Is liposuction a good way to lose weight?
Absolutely NOT.
6. Does liposuction take care of cellulite?
The answer to this question is debatable, scientifically the current answer should be no, however there are some new favorable findings with the Smartlipo MPX superficial liposuction. Again this new technology allows the surgeon to perform liposuction at a much more superficial plane compared to traditional liposuction and the cellulite problem resides in the superficial plane of the skin. So far what I can tell my patients is that superficial smartlipo appears to at least improve the appearance of cellulite, but time will tell us.
