An Interview With Dr. Winfield Hartley, M.D., F.A.C.S. , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Longmont

1. What is ultrasonic liposuction?

Liposuction is a technique designed to reduce bulges and contour irregularities from fatty deposits. It is most commonly performed in the stomach and abdomen, on the inner and outer thighs and in the knees. It is a technique that is designed to remove fat cells and restore a thinner and more slender appearance to an area. It is not a technique designed for weight loss, but is merely a tool for body sculpting. Ultrasonic liposuction is a very popular technique, whereby the fat cells are melted using ultrasound waves prior to removal of the fat cells. This generates some heat in the tissues which can tighten the skin as well as provide a more controlled result.

2. Can the fat come back?

Once the fat cells have been removed the fat cells are gone forever. The fat cells cannot come back.

3. Is it true that other areas get fat after liposuction?

If weight is maintained in a stable pattern after liposuction procedures then other areas will not get fat. However, if significant weight is gained after the procedure some recurrence of the fat will be noticed after the procedure as well as in other parts of the body.

4. Is liposuction surgery painful?

Liposuction is not an extremely painful operation, it is a sore operation. Patients feel like they essentially have a large bruise in the areas that re contoured.

5. When can exercising be resumed?

I recommend resuming light exercise at 2-3 weeks with full return to unlimited exercise at 6-8 weeks.

6. How much time off work is required?

Patients with jobs that do not require heavy lifting or straining are back to work generally after the first postoperative visit at 5 days.

7. Where are the scars located after liposuction?

The incisions for liposuction are all very small, approximately 5mm in length and are hidden within natural body contours, so as not to be visible after the procedure.
