What are the risks associated with liposuction surgery?
In an appropriate candidate having a reasonable amount of fat removed, the risks are relatively small. Infection, bleeding, scarring problems, clots, etc. are rare. The main risks are those of overcorrection, potentially leaving unwanted indentations and contour irregularities. In experienced hands, this is also rare. Undercorrection is also possible and can be dealt with, with minor revisions.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical technique which enables a plastic surgeon to remove areas of unwanted fat. This method of "spot reduction " is most commonly performed on the fatty bulges of the abdomen, hips, inner and outer thighs, and inner knees. Additional areas can also be reduced with liposuction, including the submental area(under the chin), arms, buttocks, back rolls- virtually any area there is a fatty bulge.
What technique will the surgeon use to perform the liposuction?
There are many ways to perform liposuction today. The tried and true technique of using suction attached to a metal cannulae or straw is my favorite and is safe, predictable, and proven. My personal technique of Standing Epidural Liposuction, in which the patient is standing upright for the surgery allows me to precisely shape the patient's body, similar to a scluptor working on a piece of art. I have published and taught this technique around the country. Other techniques utilizing laser, ultrasound, power assist, etc are available but are not nearly as popular or proven.
How long is the recovery period?
The recovery period is relatively quick. The procedure is not described as painful by most, rather they feel a soreness similar to a hard workout. The initial swelling and bruising resolve over several weeks but the final results can take 1-4 months. Most patients return to work within a few days to a week and return to normal activity levels soon after.
Who is a good candidate for liposuction?
The best candidates are those patients that are healthy and relatively close to their goal weights. If someone is obese, liposuction is usually not recommended. In addition, despite being fit and trim, many patients have fatty bulges that are resistant to diet and exercise. These are the very best candidates and can achieve dramatic results.
