An Interview With Dr. Speron, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Park Ridge

Is liposuction surgery painful?

Immediately after liposuction, the soreness is usually the most intense 2 to 4 days after and then decreases steadily. The tenderness and soreness typically is quite bothersome for up to 4 weeks, but gradually subsides over the following 4 to 8 weeks.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is the surgical removal of fat which improves the body's contour. There are several different techniques.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

A good candidate is a patient that understands the purpose of liposuction, to remove small amounts of fat to improve the contour of the body. It is not used to aid in weight loss. The patient also must be realistic about their expectations.

Who is not a good candidate for liposuction?

Persistent medical conditions like heart or lung diseases can cause complications in surgery, especially when general anesthesia is involved. Diabetes can also prevent problems in healing after surgery. Some older patients may not be suitable candidates. As you get older, your skin loses elasticity and this may not give the patient the results they desire. Liposuction isn't a weight loss procedure. Patients need to have realistic expectations.

How long is the recovery period?

Bruising, numbness, swelling and some pain can last up to a few weeks, but you may not completely recover and see your final results for up to six months.

How much does liposuction surgery cost?

Prices for liposuction ranges from $3,000 to $8,000 depending on where the surgery is done (there are various hospital or surgery center facilities available), the method of anesthesia, time required, which type of liposuction procedure is done and which areas are involved.

How much time off work is required?

Most patients are able to go back to work with light duty within one week. Full activity should not begin until four to six weeks after the operation.

When can exercising be resumed?

Do not return to strenuous activities for ar least 4-6 weeks or when your board certified Plastic Surgeon let's you know when you can resume normal activity.

Is liposuction a good way to lose weight?

Liposuction is not a good method for weight loss. Not only is it less effective for people who are obese, but also the results would be less than ideal, and there are increased risks for the significantly overweight person. The best candidates are those who have attained their correct body weight, and yet still have one or more difficult areas which do not respond to further weight loss or exercise.
