What is the "tumescent technique"?
The word tumescent means swollen. Before performing the liposuction procedure, the are to be treated is filled with a solution containing physiologic saline, lidocaine (numbing agent), and epinephrine (adrenaline). In addition to numbing and helping reduce bleeding, the swelling of the fat layer makes it easier to get the fat out.
Who is not a good candidate for liposuction?
In general, patients who are very overweight or have medical problems that could pose problems.
What are the risks associated with liposuction surgery?
The main risk is oversuctioning. This can create problems that may not be possible to correct. Once the fat is removed it s gone for good. Generally speaking, it is more important how much is left rather than how much is removed. One can always remove more but not put it back. The surgeon must be careful to remove a reasonable amount of fat and never oversuction.
What technique will the surgeon use to perform the liposuction?
It depends on the surgeon' s preference. I favor the technique used at Sono Bello Body. Contouring, Power Assisted liposuction is combined with laser liposuction and it is all done under local anesthesia.
How long is the recovery period?
Elastic compression garments must be worn for varying periods of time. Most patients report that their main discomfort begins to get better after 3 - 5 days. Much of the swelling resolves in the first 6 - 8 weeks. While most start looking good earlier, final results are not completely evident until 3 - 6 months post-op.
Will liposuction tighten up loose skin?
Liposuction is dependent on the skin' s ability to retract. If too much of the elastic nature of the skin has been lost it might not tighten up following liposuction. This is discussed during consultation.
Does liposuction take care of cellulite?
No, and liposuction can occasionally make cellulite look a little worse. Liposuction removes fat only. There are other options that address cellulite.
Is liposuction a good way to lose weight?
Liposuction is NOT for weight loss. It is body contouring.
Can exercise get rid of specific areas of fat without liposuction?
Yes and no. Many patients note areas that simply don' t seem to respond to traditional diet and exercise. Genetics are likely involved and contouring these areas by liposuction usually works well.
How much does liposuction surgery cost?
It depends on how much is being done.
Are the results of liposuction permanent?
Yes, but that is not to say one can no longer gain weight. If weight gain is significant, the suctioned areas will enlarge too.
